IMPROVISING IN A STYLE

We've put together a series of videos and articles that explore improvising in the various styles and genres that might come up in a Rock & Pop exam.

IMPROVISING DEMO VIDEOS

Watch videos with session musicians and Rock & Pop examiners for tips and ideas on how to improvise in a range of styles and genres. Each video focuses on improvising in a style, using our example session skills tests as a starting point.

IMPROVISING ARTICLES

We asked professional musicians JJ Wheeler and Paul Trippett to take us through the styles and genres that arise in the session skills part of our exams in a series of articles. These take us from the origins and pioneers of each genre, right through to modern artists, and dig into the different musical elements that are featured. They also look at things to consider when improvising in the style, with lots of videos for inspiration.

STYLES AND GENRES SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS

We've pulled together playlists of songs in the Rock & Pop 2018 syllabus for each of the styles and genres that might arise in the session skills tests, as well as other great songs for each. Hear the common musical elements featured in each genre represented in real-life contexts, in both songs you know and those you might not know yet! Follow our Spotify profile and playlists to easily find the playlists whenever you want to have a listen.
