ROCK & POP DRUMS SESSIONS: 'DO I WANNA KNOW?', ARCTIC MONKEYS - WITH DAVID DYSON
Watch session drummer David Dyson give his take on 'Do I Wanna Know?' by Arctic Monkeys. ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ is the opening song on Arctic Monkeys’ fifth album AM, rated by both NME and Q magazines as 2013’s Album of the Year. You’ll need to keep a steady beat in the verse when you are not playing the hi hat – one approach is to mime or ‘air drum’ the hi-hat to help with time keeping. There are plenty of coordination challenges in this song too – in particular, playing the snare and bass exactly together, sometimes with the hi hat as well.
David Dyson is a professional drummer based in London. He has worked with artists including Gregory Porter, Professor Green, Izzy Bizu, Louis Tomlinson and Kelis, and with producers including Guy Chambers, Dallas Austin and Gus Pirelli. He’s played at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s and at festivals including Latitude and Glastonbury. He also teaches and notable students include Jim Sclavunos of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds..
